Chapter 30

Reading The Heart

Naíuna led Darcus and Brogan down a narrow trail set deep within the village. Naíuna stopped at a tall palmetto dome that was growing within the sprawling roots of two massive oak trees. By now, Darcus knew the palmetto structures were inhabitable, but he did not see doors or a way to open the homes, so he stood there, waiting for Naíuna. She smiled knowingly and outstretched her hand, gently caressing an extended palm frond. Like outstretching petals from a blooming flower, a series of palmetto fronds curved outward to reveal an opening. Naíuna then stepped aside and motioned for Darcus and Brogan to enter.

Brogan instantly backed away shaking his head. He feared the confined space within the narrow opening.

“Don’t worry barbarian, there is light inside,” Naíuna explained.

When Brogan shook his head, insisting that he was not going to enter, Darcus turned toward Brogan and spoke. “I will go first, my friend. Wait here.” He then lowered his head and walked inside.

Darcus walked down a slight decline until he could stand up within the spacious underground hut. Cool air swirled around his body, soothing his tense nerves. A series of woven roots formed the interior wall of the domelike structure, protecting and concealing the inhabitants inside. Above him, light filtered in through the gaps in the fronds, illuminating the hut. On the far side of the hut, an odd-looking bed was grown into the wall. It was made from woven roots and looked quite comfortable. The rest of the hut remained barren, except for a small bubbling mud pit in the corner.

Hundreds of tiny stones embedded within the roots of the wall caught Darcus’s attention.

“Are these Azur stones?” he questioned Naíuna.

“Yes! There are many of them from here within the ground of our lands. When the sun is gone from the sky, the light from the Azur stones will shine within here,” she responded with a smile as she caressed a yellow bell-shaped flower growing on the wall.

“What is that?” Darcus nodded his head toward the strange flower.

“It’s called a vialote blossom,” she explained. “They are only found in Nyssa and have special healing properties. It is the same nectar our prince used to heal your hand. We also add the nectar to the cleansing pit you see in the corner. It is great for cleansing and healing.”

Darcus flexed his gloved hand, remembering the strange goo that Troc had given him. The ointment had been very effective. He had barely thought about his injuries during their journey.

Seeing Darcus lost in thought, Naíuna lightly brushed his shoulder and murmured, “I will leave you to your new stay while I ready for the celebration.”

Naíuna took one hesitant step away then stopped, looking back at Darcus. “Kahir,” She struggled to ask a question. “May I look into your heart?”

Darcus raised an eyebrow, unsure what she meant. Reading his confusion, Naíuna slowly stepped forward, placing her hands on Darcus’s chest. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Before Darcus could pull away, Naíuna’s soft-spoken words calmed his anxiety.
